Calligraphy & Culture Come Alive with Maaya Wakasugi

This June, internationally acclaimed calligraphy artist Maaya Wakasugi, who also created the calligraphy for LUMINE’s brand symbol “I Am Who I AM”, brings his powerful yet graceful brushstrokes to life in a series of intimate in-store activations, gallery showcases, and cultural exhibitions — all curated to inspire reflection, connection, and individuality.

Maaya Wakasugi is a Japanese calligraphy artist renowned for transforming traditional Shodō into a compelling form of contemporary art. Born in Okayama, Japan, he began practicing calligraphy at the age of six, holding his first solo exhibition by seventeen. After graduating from the Department of Chinese Literature at Daito Bunka University—a prestigious institution celebrated for its calligraphy tradition—Maaya cultivated a distinctive style inspired by ancient kanji characters, reimagining them with bold, modern flair.

His artistic journey has spanned continents, with highlights including logo design work associated with the Louvre Museum, a live performance at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, and creating the brand symbol for Lumine Singapore. He also calligraphed the title for NHK’s historical drama Onna Jōshu Naotora and penned the name of Japan’s imperial era “Reiwa” for Yahoo! JAPAN. Most recently, he has drawn international attention for his title calligraphy for The Ninth Jedi, a new instalment in Star Wars: Visions, to be released by Lucas film in 2026.

Now based in Bordeaux, France, and a member of La Maison des Artistes, Maaya continues to explore and expand his artistic expression. He teaches calligraphy at institutions such as PHILOMATHIQUE and the Don Bosco Institute in Gradignan, while also studying painting at the École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux.

Maaya’s works transcend linguistic and cultural boundaries, becoming bridges between people and places. With every brushstroke, he channels the energy of tradition into a contemporary visual language—timeless, universal, and deeply human.
